The Daily Bitterness with Jon Stewart

After a hiatus of almost a year, I went back to watch some episodes of the Daily Show with Jon Stewart and the Colbert Report. The Colbert Report was as funny as ever, but the Daily Show’s really taken on a bitter edge to its humour. Stewart really sounds like he’s got an axe to grind against the Republicans.

Perhaps it’s because he feels he can actually influence the election this time around and really wants the Democrats to win, but he’s beating on the Republicans. For example, last week’s Democratic Party’s National Convention had it’s fair share of jokes, but he didn’t really take many Democrats to task. The Republican Convention this week, by comparison, he’s taken his Republican guests to task about all sorts of issues, acting a bit more like a regular talking head, except funnier. In fact, he didn’t really list to last night’s guest, Mike Hukabee, instead speaking over him, re-iterating his point again and again without recognizing the merit of Hukabee’s arguments.

That said, Stewart has never claimed to be bipartison, but I feel that this sort of jabby, bitter comedy is a bit too petty and small-hearted. I hope he mellows out a bit after the election, otherwise he may have a tough time making fun of a Democratic administration.

  1. I’ve been watching the candidates on youtube and I think the Republicans have been blacklisted by every talk show on the planet. You might watch how the View treated John McCain and his wife. Or compare McCain’s appearance to Obama’s on Ellen. McCain got grilled for his beliefs and Obama got to dance.
